Noctum Creature: Bára Wünscher
Get ready for a Noctum-style Valentine's Day celebration like no other!
Bára Wünscher is an amazing knitter with an unforgettable style and make-up. We both are passionate about handcrafting and unusual aesthetics, so we have combined her knitted artwork with our natural latex treasures to create the pinkest look. We weren't trying to take perfect photos. Our aim was to capture Bára's supernatural presence in a world shaped by artificial intelligence and digital enhancements.
What is hidden behind her creations and what are her favourite creatures? The interview will reveal everything…
1. How would you describe yourself, and what is your favourite creature?
I would describe myself as someone who always has to do something with their hands, and due to this, I am super glad I found textile arts. I would say that this is a thing that others can see as inspiring a lot - the passion I put into everything I create, and my obsession with learning anything surrounding this topic - this is something that warms my heart.
My favourite creatures are definitely mermaids. There’s a documentary called Mermaids: The Body Found, and it really makes sense to me that they exist. I love to think about it and somehow I love to imagine myself as them. Deep sea scares me so much, but at the same time I feel connected to it - I feel like I cannot breathe when thinking about it, how overwhelmed and intrigued I am.
Also, I would like to give an honourable mention to vampires from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, their faces are a big inspiration for my makeup.
2. Can you tell us more about what fascinates you about knitting and what your favourite thing to make is?
Hmmmm, I would say that eeeverything surrounding textile art fascinates me. I love that I learned to knit when I was around 6 years old from my grandma, who worked as a yarn dyer in a Czech yarn brand called Vlnap. Then, I completely immersed myself in knitting in 2021, knitting every day, everywhere. After that, I also learned to crochet, but a big step up for me was learning how to spin my own yarn. It’s so amazing to observe the structures of all the materials, of all the different sheep breeds or other animals’ and plants’ fibers, since I’m a very tactile person. It makes me think about nature a lot more than before.
Speaking of nature – another part of my textile work is dyeing with natural materials, and it’s so interesting to learn about plants that are surrounding you. Last year, I experienced many times that I learned about a new dye plant, thinking it doesn’t grow anywhere near me. The next day, I saw those plants everywhere, changing my perception like magic.
And also, there’s so much history behind textiles!!! For me, it’s still impossible to think about how many textiles people created using just a spindle – which is a predecessor to the spinning wheel – not just for clothing… just think of sails, for example, it took them months. Crazy!
To answer the second question – I think my favourite thing to make is something for someone, knowing that they’ll love it. :)
3. What fascinates you the most?
Apart from textiles, it’s definitely nature, the beauty it is able to create. A thing I cannot stop thinking about are cave pearls; they feel so angelic, otherworldly.
4. Which song best represents your vibe?
I can’t think of any song right now, at this moment I would pick any DJ set by @_alterum, they’re so much fun, I’m listening to them nonstop.
I think the best song to represent my vibe is Johannes Brahms’ Lullaby.
5. What's your favourite part of your body? What do you love most about yourself?
It’s really nice to know that this question is super hard to answer for me, and not because of the wrong reasons. I would say I love almost everything :))) But I mainly love my nose, freckles and hands.
I love to see new freckles appear on my body. Last year I noticed a new freckle on my hand, I cannot stop looking at it, how lovely the placement is to me.
6. What draws you to Noctum?
I love Noctum very, very much, and I’m so excited that a brand like yours exists in Czechia. I appreciate a lot that your visuals are made for freaks and angels, which doesn’t always appeal to larger society, but it’s important for us. It’s also heartwarming that we can support someone who is part of this community.
